March is National Nutrition Month®

It's very likely that you have heard someone say "an apple a day keeps the doctor away." Well, this saying underlines the importance of a balanced diet, and also points to the importance of incorporating adequate amounts of fruit.

National Nutrition Month® was established over fifty years ago by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, and it's celebrated annually throughout March. This year's focus, under the theme "Beyond the Table," delves into the journey of nutrition from farm to fork, encompassing aspects like food production, distribution, and navigating through grocery stores and farmers markets. The theme also emphasizes sustainability, advocating for initiatives to reduce food waste across various settings, from schools and workplaces to homes and beyond. Prioritizing sustainability in our dietary choices not only promotes healthy nourishment but also aids in environmental preservation.

Eating the right amounts of the right foods can have a significant impact on your health. Here are some weekly tips that you can use to prioritize making informed food choices and cultivating healthy eating and physical activity habits. Use these tips and make every month nutrition month for you and your family.

Week 1: Nourishment on Any Budget

  • Learn essential cooking skills and meal planning techniques.

  • Utilize grocery lists and take advantage of sales while shopping for food.

  • Familiarize yourself with community resources for example, local food banks.

  • Practice safe food handling at home - always wash fruits and vegetables thoroughly under running water before eating and/or cooking them.

Week 2: Consult a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN)

  • Request a referral to an RDN from your physician or primary care provider if you need dietary advice.

  • Seek out an RDN who specializes in addressing your specific nutritional needs.

  • Receive tailored nutrition guidance to achieve your health objectives.

  • Explore the diverse ways RDNs can assist you in achieving a healthier lifestyle.

Week 3: Embrace Dietary Diversity

  • Incorporate your favorite cultural foods and culinary traditions.

  • Explore foods in different forms, including fresh, frozen, canned, and dried.

  • Experiment with recipes featuring different ingredients.

  • Expand your palate by trying new foods or exploring global cuisines.

Week 4: Mindful Eating for the Environment

  • Repurpose leftovers creatively and adopt strategies to minimize food waste.

  • Choose more plant-based meals and snacks.

  • Prioritize purchasing seasonal and locally sourced foods from farmers.

  • Consider growing some of your own food at home or participating in community gardening initiatives.

Together let's celebrate National Nutrition Month® by embracing these practices and fostering a healthier, more sustainable relationship with food and our environment. Can we do it? Yes, we can.
